2017 Toyota Corolla iM Overview
While the Corolla has been in the Toyota lineup for a long time, the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM is the first of its kind. It marks the merger of Toyota and Scion models. If you were familiar with the previous Corolla and the Scion lineup, you will have a general idea of what to expect, but even so, this is essentially an all-new model, meaning that there is a lot to learn about it. The Corolla iM gives you all the features and styling drivers love about the Corolla but in a hatchback design with a few differences.
The Corolla iM is stylish with aggressive features like a standard aerodynamic kit that affects the front fascia, rear bumper, and side skirts. The black honeycomb grille shows the Corolla iM’s performance history; on the opposite end, you will find a chrome-tipped exhaust and spoiler to complete its sporty styling. The standard wheels on the 2017 Corolla iM are 17-inch alloys that show off its wild side with their gloss-black accents and the machined face. This hatchback also comes standard with LED daytime running lights to make sure other drivers can see you on the road while adding style and remaining efficient. LED taillights are also standard, and you get even more LEDs in the turn signal indicators on the exterior mirrors. Since drivers of the Corolla iM like to take advantage of its ability to fit into small spaces, Toyota included power-folding exterior mirrors to make it easy to squeeze into place. As a bonus, the mirrors are even heated so they are less likely to fog up.
Inside the 2017 Corolla iM, you will see many similarities to the sedan, along with enough to set it apart as its own model. The dashboard has an upscale appearance and uses premium materials with accent stitching to stand out from the crowd. There are even high-end piano-black accents around the touchscreen. Everyone in the Corolla iM will be comfortable regardless of the weather outside thanks to the standard dual-zone climate control system that takes out the guesswork. It is easy to find the right position with 6-way adjustment for the driver and 4-way adjustment for the front passenger. Both seats also have pockets in the back for extra storage of tissues, maps, or anything else you need.
In addition to the high-end feel within the Corolla iM, this Toyota delivers a sporty vibe. A sport gauge cluster comes standard with its speedometer and tachometer that were inspired by performance vehicles. This feeling is enhanced by the sport front bucket seats that are deeply bolstered to let you feel secure and highly adjustable. One of the biggest selling points in favor of the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM is its expansive cargo area that you access through the rear hatch. The rear seats split 60/40, making it easy to fold down one or both and enjoy even more than the 20.8 cubic feet behind them. When upright, you can take advantage of the two cup holders and center armrest in the rear, taking away doubts about where to safely put your drink.
Look between the gauge clusters and you will find the standard 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display that provides all of the information you want at a glance. You can see things like the outside temperature, your current song, your average miles per gallon, your trip distance, and more. You also get a standard Display Audio system with a 7-inch touchscreen, the Aha Radio app, auxiliary audio input, a USB port with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth phone and audio, HD radio, and advanced voice recognition. You can also upgrade this system to include navigation so you never get lost, even when exploring new areas. Every Corolla iM also has controls right on the steering wheel, including the ability to press a button and use the advanced voice recognition technology to let you access music or other features.
A backup camera comes standard across the Corolla iM lineup, making it easier to get into your parking spot without concerns about hitting objects around you. Paving the way for the future, the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM also has the entire Toyota Safety Sense C suite as standard. This active safety package gives you automatic high beams, lane departure alert, and the incredibly useful pre-collision system to help you avoid accidents. The last of these will give you visual and audible warnings when you are in danger of a frontal collision and then automatically active brake assistance if you don’t take action.
As with all Toyotas, you also get the Star Safety System standard in the Corolla iM with features like vehicle stability control, smart stop technology, anti-lock braking system, and traction control. There are also eight standard airbags, including the Advanced Airbag System for the front passenger and driver, side curtain airbags, and front seat-cushion and knee airbags. Other standard safety features include the Tire Pressure Monitor System, LATCH anchors, whiplash-injury-lessening seats, head-impact protection structure, and energy-absorbing crumple zones.
The Toyota Corolla iM focuses more on efficiency than performance with its 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering up to 28 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. Even with such great efficiency, the 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet are more than enough for most drivers. You also have the choice of either a 6-speed manual transmission of a CVT with intelligence and Shift Mode, depending on your driving style. All Corolla iM models are front-wheel drive. This Toyota hatchback has a MacPherson strut front suspension along with a double-wishbone rear suspension that work together to help it hug corners. The result is a vehicle that can be agile on mountain roads or smooth when driving in the city. If you want a little more oomph when driving your 2017 Corolla iM, simply press the available Sport Mode button. The system will adjust the throttle so the vehicle feels livelier and ready to provide thrills.
